Here's to Change

It is a thankful morning to know that last night, people of Taipei City selected a mayor who does not belong to any political party. He is a doctor who does not have any political background. Just like most of us, he achieves what he has by his own effort. He promises "changes" for Taipei, for an open and transparent government. This is not an easy thing. The real challenge is coming; everyone is watching. The new mayor, instead of celebrating, has called for a meeting on the second day to initiate the change. We know this is going to be tough; we will all be watching, and supervising, in hope for a real democracy this time. In fact, I am not a person who believes in hero, but I do believe in the power of each and one of us to make things right and make the system a better one. Today, Taiwan set records. People speak their voices out by voting. The result of this election in Taiwan is out of expectation in almost every city. For the first time, young generations are no longer indifferent to politics and participate in the election by their means. We debated, analyzed issues critically and broadcasted online while mainstream media is mostly manipulated by political parties. I believe this election is one of the results of the Sun Flower Movement or the social movements happened in previous years. It is also a direct accusation toward the current ruling party that they shall no longer disregard the right of the people. We might still be innocent, but we have dreams, we want to do the right thing, we want to make changes to Taiwan, we want a better democracy. Today, the dreamers get together and sing our dreams. We are not the only one.
